Essential Pharmaceuticals, LCC, is based in Ewing, NJ and provides medical researchers and biopharmaceutical manufacturers new tools to bring performance, convenience, and control to enhance the advancement of basic research and drug discovery. Essential Pharmaceuticals supports the preservation and growth of human systems—from the cell to the entire organ—through expanding its research and product development to further medical treatments for mankind.
Established in 2006, the Essential Pharmaceuticals story actually goes back to the year 2000 with the launch of Custodiol® HTK organ preservation solution. At that time, Allan Weber, had brought the product to Odyssey Pharmaceuticals as a product in the company’s new organ transplant line of business. The product rapidly grew into a significant yet highly specialized business with its own sales team and marketing network.
In 2005, Odyssey’s parent company was in the process of being acquired by the only company in the US with a competitive product to Custodiol. Allan Weber, then General Manager for Odyssey, saw the opportunity with the divestiture necessitated by government regulations, and created Essential Pharmaceuticals, bringing the entire sales division with him. Allan Weber is our CEO.
Essential continued to grow Custodiol, and even sought studies for new indications at the FDA, which are ongoing. Essential explored new medical treatments in the area of transplant surgery, looking to capitalize on our years of support and learning with the surgeons and medical personnel. Essential’s search into how better preserve organs led it to start looking at how to preserve the cells of the organs themselves. With the leadership of Essential’s new Chief Science Officer, this led to a new business – the “Ess” line of products.
Now, after three years of development, Essential Pharmaceuticals has two new products:
- Cell-Ess®: A chemically-defined media supplement that boosts protein yield and improves bioproduction efficiencies, potentially reducing costs and increasing manufacturing flexibility.
- Clin-Ess®: An animal component free medium that can preserve tissue samples for study and diagnostic testing at cold or frozen temperatures.
Cell-Ess® can be used by those conducting large scale bioproduction of therapeutic proteins as a supplement to their optimized cells and media. Cell-Ess provides a boost protein yield >25%, enables higher cell viability during the run, shortens run cycles, and provides consistent glycosylation patterns. The supplement is manufactured under cGMP, and a device master file is available. Cell-Ess is a 100% synthetic, chemically-defined and animal component free medium with low lot-to-lot variation.
Tissue specimens preserved with Clin-Ess® have less DNA and RNA degradation and fewer artifacts than those preserved using conventional methods, allowing for more efficient and safer tissue preservation than traditional methods. Additionally, Clin-Ess allows for transport without paraformaldehyde and as such does not effect downstream testing such as DNA and RNA tests.
